Windows & Office End of Support: What You Need to Know
Still using Windows 10 or Office 2016/2019? Time is running out. With end-of-support deadlines rapidly approaching, continuing on these platforms may expose your systems to rising security risks — and depending on Extended Security Updates (ESUs) could become costly or limited, depending on your circumstances.
Why It Matters
Delaying upgrades doesn’t just risk data breaches or non-compliance — it often results in higher support costs, system downtime, and reduced efficiency across your organisation.
What Does “End of Support” Mean?
Once Microsoft ends support for a product, it no longer provides:
- Security updates
- Bug fixes
- Feature enhancements
- Technical support
Your system may continue to run but will become increasingly vulnerable and incompatible with modern software and services.
Key End-of-Support Dates:
Windows 10: 14 October 2025
Office 2016/2019: October 2025
What Are Your Options After 2025?
Once support ends, users and organisations have three primary options:
1. Upgrade to Windows 11 + Microsoft 365
Best for long-term value and productivity. Gain access to modern security features, cloud services, performance improvements, and seamless Microsoft 365 integration (Word, Excel, Teams, OneDrive).
2. Subscribe to Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU)
If you’re not ready to upgrade your device or operating system, Microsoft offers ESU for Windows 10. However, availability and cost differ depending on whether you’re an individual or a business user.
3. Upgrade Hardware Where Necessary
For devices that don’t meet Windows 11 requirements (such as lacking TPM 2.0), consider replacing outdated hardware with modern, secure alternatives.
Windows 10 ESU: What You Need to Know
For Individual Users
Consumers and home users will be able to subscribe to ESU for one additional year starting from October 2025. Microsoft will offer:
- One year of updates (Oct 2025–Oct 2026)
- Options to subscribe for free (via Windows Backup & OneDrive sync), redeem Microsoft Rewards points, or pay a flat fee
UK Pricing (estimated):
Year 1 only: ~£25 (or free via OneDrive sync or 1,000 Rewards points)
Note: This is a one-time option. No renewal available for individuals.
For Organisations
Businesses of all sizes — including SMEs — will be able to purchase ESUs via a Microsoft partner or CSP starting September 2025. These updates include critical and important security fixes only (no feature updates).
Estimated Commercial ESU Costs (per device):
Year 1 (2025–2026): ~£48
Year 2 (2026–2027): ~£96
Year 3 (2027–2028): ~£192
Organisations using Windows 365 Cloud PCs or Azure Virtual Machines will receive ESUs automatically at no extra cost.
Why Windows 11 is the Smarter Choice
- Next-Generation Security: Includes TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, Windows Hello, and Zero Trust support
- Faster Performance: Built for SSDs and modern CPUs with better power efficiency
- Cloud-First Integration: Deep integration with OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, and 365 apps
- Lower Long-Term Costs: Avoids ESU charges, reduces downtime, and simplifies support
How to Prepare for the Transition
- Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check Tool to assess Windows 11 compatibility.
- Back up all important files and cloud-sync your data.
- Choose the right Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise plan for your team.
- Not sure where to start? Our IT specialists can assist with planning, licensing, and smooth deployment.
Final Thoughts: Upgrade Now to Avoid Cost and Risk
Delaying upgrades may feel easier in the short term, but it could result in:
- Mounting ESU or hardware costs
- Greater risk of cyberattacks and data breaches
- Regulatory and compliance issues
Take control of your IT future — move to Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 now. It’s safer, faster, and more cost-effective in the long run.
